Now that it is week 3 of AP Lit & Comp I am now starting to get a better idea on what I should expect in class each week. I am starting to get more comfortable with expressing myself and talking to the class as a whole in group discussions.
This week our POW was "Cross" by Langston Hughes. This poem was a very good one to analyze because the purpose of the poem was very bold and easy to pick up. When first discussing the meaning of the poem with Mr. Schoenborn and Ellen, I felt a bit uncomfortable because of the topics discussed in the poem such as racism and rape. However after Mr. Schoenborn pushed me out of my comfort zone to actually talk about it I realized that these uncomfortable topics are necessary to learn about because like it or not, they are apart of our history. Not talking about what happened to African Americans in this time period would be a crime because it would be like pretending these terrible things never happened. That's why I think Mr. Schoenborn wants us to make sure we do not filter our thoughts in this class.
This week we also learned about the elements of fiction, these being structure, characterization, theme, fantasy, symbolism, humor, and point of view. I am in a group with Emily, Sydney, and Allie and we chose to look further into structure and humor for our project. This is mostly because the short stories that fell in these categories seemed interesting to us. We learned that humor doesn't necessarily mean laugh out loud funny. It may not actually be funny at all but instead it uses sarcasm and irony to make a point.
Overall this week was a good week and I can't wait to see what we learn next week!
