This week in AP Lit and Comp we started our tragedy unit. So far I have enjoyed it because I really like the different ways we learn about tragedy such as TED Talks, plays, and Wikipedia searches. Of the three different things we have explored so far, I found the TED Talks to be the most interesting because I liked the different ideas that it talked about such as the reason we are scared of failure is because of the ridicule and judgment that comes with failing. Also I liked how it talked about how you can't be successful at everything, which may be tragic, but is very true. So far the TED talk and the play Oedipus the King have both talked about how you can't be successful at everything. I think that it would be a good thing to talk about in my tragedy unit paper.

This week we studied a poem called "The Ballad of Burmingham". It was a very good poem because of the irony and structure in it that helped bring emotion to the reader. I just finished my POW on this poem and I feel that it may be my best POW yet. I like how we elaborate over the poems in class because I get to hear different opinions on the poem. However, I'm concerned that when we take the AP test and we can't have other people's opinions that I may not know what to write about. I think it would be good to practice writing POWs relying only on the information we have in our own heads and in the poem once we get closer to the actual test. But for now I enjoy sharing opinions because it helps me open up my mind to different concepts on analyzing poems. My week of AP Lit was spent mostly on the elements of fiction essay and presentation. We had a great time creating our prezi together. Our topics of humor and structure allowed for a fun presentation. We also worked on our creative writing project which had slipped my mind earlier in the marking period so I had to make up for it Sunday night. I thought it would be a long demanding project but really it was easy and quite fast. I enjoyed being able to write without any prompts or restrictions. I think the creative writing project has to be my favorite so far :) This week in AP Lit we continued working on our elements of fiction project. This project has allowed me to better understand what humor and structure are. I think that the biggest issue my group ran into on the project was trying to write the essay together. It was not essay to write it because all of us have different writing styles and opinions. When one of my partners would write a sentence that I didn't think made much sense, I wouldn't want to correct it because I didn't want to upset them. I have never wrote an essay with anyone other than myself so this was a new challenge for me. We are almost done with it now though and I feel our finishing product will be done very well. We still have to create our Prezi presentation but I don't think that will take us long since we already completed the most difficult task (being the essay). I'm excited to present this to the class because I love giving presentations! This week worked on our POW "I Felt a Funeral, In My Brain," by Emily Dickenson. We explicated it and went of the rhetorical meaning but after school being canceled Thursday and having a shortened period on Friday, we were not able to write our essay for this poem. Most of our time in AP Lit/Comp this week was spent on our elements of Literature project. My group has finished half of our essay so far and we still have yet to make our presentation. I have learned a lot about humor and structure with this project. I learned that structure and plot go hand in hand. The structure of a story is like the skeleton and the plot is like the muscles because the structure is generally the same from story to story, this is why they can be predictable, and the plot is what gets switched up and adds extra that makes the story different from another. The other thing that we have been doing in class is work on our SSR. I have really struggled to find the time to read my book these six weeks because I have been so busy. Hopefully now that homecoming is over I will have more time on my hands! |
