Symbolism
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
1) Twenty centuries of stony sleep
Interpretation: Someone who is in a deep sleep for a long time
Symbol: Death
2) And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
Interpretation: A powerful individual is coming to Bethlehem
Symbol: The birth of Jesus

Satire
Satire is a literary technique in which peoples behaviors are ridiculed for the purpose of bringing about social reform and improving society. Satire may be gently witty, mildly abrasive, or bitterly critical and it often uses exaggeration to force readers to see something in a more critical light. One of the satirists most reliable tools is verbal irony. Satirists also use humor and parody.
"A Modest Proposal" by Swift is satirical because he uses it ridicules those who are very poor but have many children. Swift makes bitter remarks regarding these families because they have so many children that they can't afford to feed them. He goes as far as saying that these families reproduce just so they can eat their babies to put food on their tables. He even said that fertile woman could be entered in contests to see who could make the tastiest baby. All of these remarks are unrealistic but Swift uses these exaggerations in the hope to bring social reform.

Naturalism
Naturalism:
An extreme form of realism, naturalism in fiction involves the depiction of
life objectively and precisely, without idealizing. However, the naturalist
creates characters who are victims of environmental forces and internal drives
beyond their comprehension and control. Naturalistic fiction conveys the belief
that universal forces result in an indifference to human suffering.
"To Build a Fire" is a naturalist work because the character dies because of bad weather and the world just continues to go on. After the man dies, the dog just turns around and goes back to camp like he doesn't even care the man died. This brutality of the story caused by a greater force not caring about the death of one man is what makes this piece condsidered to be naturalism.

Allegory
Allegory:
when characters or events represent a symbolic and a literal meaning in the same
story and often provide a truth about life.
"Terrible Things" is an allegory because it has its literal meaning of sticking up for what's
right even if it doesn't affect you, and a symbolic meaning reflecting how when
the nazis came after certain people, no one protected them or stood up for them.
The truth about life given from this allegory is that you must stand up for
what's right or else it will come back to bite you in the end.

Big Question
My book is Miss Peregine's Home for Peculiar Children and my big question for it is "Is immortality or death more desirable". The events that lead me to come up with this question are as follows:
- Jacob's Grandfather chose death over immortality in order to have a family
- Miss Peregrine wouldn't let Jacob tell the children about the outside world so they wouldn't me tempted to choose mortality
- The children would sneak out of the loop in order to have some fun because they were bored at the house
- Jacob chose immortality
- Jacob's grandfather chose death and he died a tragic and horrid death
Based on what I read in this book, I have come to the conclusion that death is preferred over immortality because living the same day over and over again without aging proved to be undesirable for some of the characters. All of the characters continuously wondered what life would be like if they were normal and none could start a family or live past the day of September 3rd. Their immortality caused the children to be unhappy with their special powers because they could never be like normal kids.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children: Gothic Romance
I am finished with this book now. It was great but had a terrible ending! I will need to read the next book..
Identity was used throughout this book when the main character, Jacob, tried to find out who he was. Jacob knew little about his family's past and little about who he was because he had no friends and was not close to much of his family after his grandfather died. Jacob went to the island where his grandfather grew up in order to discover his true identity.

Annotated Bibliography
Albom, Mitch. The Five People You Meet in Heaven. New York: Hyperion
Books, 2003. Print.
The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a book about a man named Eddie who sacrifices his life for a little girl. When he dies, he goes to heaven and meets 5 people who impacted his life in some way. These people all teach him a valuable lesson that he did not discover himself when he was on earth. He spends a short time with each person he meets in their own part of heaven. The people allow Eddie to understand his life and figure out what he wants his heaven to be. The book ends in a surprising twist and keeps you reading to the end. It will also make you stop and think about the way you live your life and how every little thing you do can have a great impact.
I would recommend this book for anyone who like to read book about the purpose of live and the value of each human being. This author also wrote the well-known book, Tuesday’s with Morey which is another great read similar to this book. This book is a fast read and I enjoyed it alot. If you want a mind-opening book, then this is the book for you.

Class Expentations
This will be my second trimester of 11th grade English with Mr. Spence. However, it will be my first English class with Ms. Case. I had a lot of fun first trimester with Mr. Spence and I believe the class this trimester with Ms. Case teaching us will be equally enjoyable. I plan on reading many different types of books throughout the class as well as writing some papers just like we did in the past. What I look forward to most is relaxing on Friday when reading my SSR book. It's such a relief after a tough week to just walk into your 5th hour, sit back, and enjoy a great book! Judging by the rest of my schedule (Which includes Pre-Calc, History, and Spanish...yuck!), I believe this English class will be my chance to be able to relieve the stress of the day and actually enjoy learning. My 5th hour will be the hour I look forward to most each day for the remainder of this trimester! Why can't English be three trimesters instead of two???
Creativity
Creativity is imagination set on fire by person with an open mind and a curious heart. It is the very element that sparks the imagination of every artist, musician, and actor in the world. Creativity provides an outlet for people to express themselves in any way they want. Without it, there would be know passion and excitement in the world; we would all be walking around in a black and white world. In Ken Robinson's speech about education, he explained how important it is to incorporate creativity into the school day. I strongly agree with him because if we continue to "mass produce" students, as Robinson said, then students would have to all learn the same things even though we all have different interests and abilities. With creativity in the classroom, students will be much more interested in learning because they will be taught subjects that they are interested in. Why make a future marketing professional take a surplus of science classes when they could be taking business classes instead? It simply is just more efficient to allow students to take classes that relate to what they want to be when they grow up rather than classes that everyone has to take.
