Sam Berryhill as a Reader and Writer
Growing up, the three most important women in Sam's life were her mother and her grandmothers. All three constantly read books around her which made Sam immediately take an interest in reading at a young age. Sam's Grandma would get a new book and finish it in the same day nearly every time! They would all read to Sam before she could read herself. By age 3, Sam could recite every world in Green Eggs and Ham by Doctor Seuss, which in return earned her the nickname "Sam-I-Am". Now she is almost 18 years old and reading is still a very important part of her life. When before Sam would stick to books about high school romance and drama, she now tries to step out of her comfort zone and read novels that involve other cultures. Reading for Sam is an escape when she gets too frustrated with her life. It allows her to transport from her world and venture into a new one where her imagination can take off. When Sam opens a book she can travel to different countries, experience new cultures, and open her mind up to theories and ideas that she could have never thought of on her own. A simple book can serve as a time machine that takes you back in time or into the future without even leaving the comfort of your home. Reading is one of the most powerful tools on this world because it allows us to pass on information, open our minds, and experience the lives of others across the world. This is why reading has always amazed Sam. Just like in any activity, you must practice reading to become good at it. The more you read and challenge yourself, the better you will get at it. Reading comes easy to Sam when she finds a book that is relatable or fascinating. For example, during her summer reading assignment Sam read The Fall by Albert Camus. Sam finished this book in one day because it was so fascinating to her with its mind-opening content. Sam's biggest challenge with reading is finding the time to open the book. With all of her extracurricular activities, she hardly has time to sleep let alone read. This is a frustrating challenge for Sam, but she has learned through out the years to better manage her time which has helped her find the time to read. When choosing books to read, Sam reads the back cover and the first couple of pages to get an idea of what the book will be like. She looks for books that will be interesting and keep her reading. She tries to keep an open mind when selecting her reading material because if she always picked the same type of books then the endings would be to predictable and boring. Sam likes to read from home when she has the time, which as she mentioned earlier is a rarity during the school year. However, when she does find the time Sam really enjoys reading.
Sam always enjoyed writing when she was younger. She used to keep a unicorn diary and record everything she did each day between ages 7 and 8. Once she got into high school she found her writer's voice and this is when she really began to write a lot. Once she joined the club BPA at her school she learned how to properly write research papers and speeches. But where Sam really learned how to write was by watching her older cousin Amber do her homework. Amber would also help Sam write for her classes too. Amber taught her about spelling and grammar and inspired Sam to experiment with writing by creating her own stories. Sam writes so she can express her feelings on paper with out having to worry about being interrupted or judged by any people. Writing allows people to interact with each other with out face to face contact. It also allows them to pass down information from generation to generation. Other than for communication, writing can also be used as a form of expression. People can write about how they are feeling as a way to relive stress or to inspire others. People can share their writing for entertainment purposes like in a play or a poetry show. The uses of writing are endless! In order for someone to write well they obviously must know the how to use proper grammar and spelling or else their writing would be illegible. Beyond that the writer must have a good author's voice in order to keep the reader interested in the writing.
